What’s On

August showcases a wonderful selection of entertainment, theatre and unique dining experiences.

The remarkable crew at Australian Venue Co. have opened the doors to its newest venture in Melbourne, Morris House. An undeniably exciting experience featuring a comedy club and weekly jazz nights. Another notable experience in Sydney, is the Domaine Ponsot Wine Dinner at Bentley Restaurant and Bar, an unmissable evening with a six-course tasting menu matched with 15 iconic Domaine Ponsot wines.

Melbourne and Sydney set the scene as the entertainment epicentre with a selection of shows and festivals from all backgrounds and genres which will guarantee enjoyment for all. The next month will feature the Sydney Fringe Festival, John Kaufmann at the Sydney Opera House, Horizon Festival in the Sunshine Coast, and Melbourne’s newest large-scale event, Now or Never.

  • Domaine Ponsot Wine Dinner: Tickets On Sale Now

    Bentley Restaurant and Bar are hosting an unmissable evening on Tuesday 15th August for a six-course tasting menu matched with 15 iconic Domaine Ponsot wines. The event is hosted by wine importer and Bibendum Wine Co’s owner Rob Walters and is set within The Bentley Private Dining Room. With legendary wines like Morey 1er Cru Clos des Monts Luisants and Clos De La Roche Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes on the menu, it's a new catalogue of wines that have yet to be showcased, in what will be a spectacular evening.

  • Venture Beyond By Penfolds: Tickets On Sale Now

    Venture Beyond has returned to Carraigeworks in Sydney on the 18th and 19th of August for an all-inclusive ticketed event that promises an evening of adventure and discovery. Influenced by the Penfolds spirit of venturing beyond, an ocean inspired menu has been created by Scott Huggins, Executive Chef at Penfolds Magill Estate Restaurant, featuring lobster rolls and fish tacos. A range of wines will be available on the night, including a selection from the newly released Penfolds Collection 2023. Fresh from performing at Glastonbury Festival, chart-topping UK musician and DJ, Example, will headline across the two nights.

  • Reine and La Rue

    From August 1st, Nomad owners Al and Rebecca Yazbek, will open the doors to the highly anticipated 150 seat french venue, Reine and La Rue. Housed in the original Melbourne Stock Exchange, which has been closed for over 20 years, the restaurant is tucked away behind the gothic bank at Queen and Collins St in the CBD. The Nomad team worked closely with Heritage Victoria, RBA Heritage Architects, and Akin Atelier to transform the former bank into an elegant, cathedral-esque dining room. Enjoy French classics such as steak frites, handpicked crab brandade, confit duck and cheese trolleys whilst sitting amongst vaulted ceilings, granite columns, stained glass tessellated floor tiles, limestone walls that date back to 1891.

  • Morris House

    Constructed in 1924, the Morris House building has seen a lot in its almost century-long tenure on the corner of Little Collins and Exhibition Street. Spread across the four storeys the bold new venture from the Australian Venue Co team includes an elevated pub-style dining room, a bar and live music space, a rooftop bar that overlooks the CBD, and a dedicated comedy space downstairs where you’ll find Arj Barker every Tuesday night. On the dining front, Morris is combining the timeless pub classics with dialled-up essentials from a whole-crumbed pork rib eye to spanner crab pasta, and baked cheesecake with boozy jelly that channels a Manhattan cocktail.

  • Horizon Sky Dining

    Formerly Four Winds 360 Revolving Restaurant, the beloved Gold Coast icon has been reborn as Horizon Sky Dining, with 360-degree views sitting sky-high above Surfers Paradise. Perched on the 26th floor and space for 128 patrons, the restaurant offers an expansive seafood buffet and sparkling ocean views. From locally sourced Mooloolaba Prawns and Pacific Oysters to scallops from Harvey Bay, the spread is a celebration of Queensland’s finest produce. Horizon Sky Dining is taking the Gold Coast stalwart to new heights as the pinnacle of the Crowne Plaza’s multi-million dollar refurbishment.

    Open for lunch, dinner and matinee high teas, Midden will champion native Australian ingredients in a casual all-day setting. Celebrated indigenous chef and Bundjalung man Mark Olive has spent more than four decades educating Australians about native ingredients and what he describes as our national cuisine. Olive is best known for his SBS series, The Outback Cafe, and has also appeared as a guest judge on Masterchef. Vibrant flavours inspired by millennia of traditional cuisine, including damper bread served alongside whipped eucalyptus butter, blue gum smoked barramundi, and wallaby shanks braised in bush tomato.

  • The Smoking Camel

    The crew that brought us Light Years, have now opened the bold new charcoal grill Middle Eastern restaurant, Smoking Camel. Inspired by a love for bright, bold and flavourful food that leans into the intricate tapestry of the Middle East, this stylish new eatery brings a modern twist to traditional flavours from Lebanon, Turkey, Israel and the beyond. The 55-seat venue showcases vibrant interiors, gold camels, curved archways and bold curtains that pay homage to the vibrant Middle Eastern metropolises. The share-style dishes cooked over charcoal are complemented by Lebanese-sourced wines from the Bekaa Valley, one of the oldest winemaking regions in the world.

  • Tama

    The GPO has officially re-opened its doors after its 9 million dollar makeover featuring the new restaurant, Tama, inspired by the iconic and rich heritage of the 1880’s. Located on the ground floor, this swanky restaurant’s interior includes massive green velvet clad booths and white-clothed tables under an incredible glass sculpture that fills the airy, two-story atrium above. Executive Chef Richard Ousby, who previously helmed the kitchen at Stokehouse, has forumlated a fantastic menu featuring cripsy polent gems with blue cheese, 2kg Angus tomahawks, and berkshire pork belly with apple and macadamia, crab bisque linguine, and extra large Moreton Bay bugs.

  • Icebergs Winter Sundays

    Sydney’s most esteemed, view heavy restaurant is celebrating 20 years with cocktails, bar snacks and music between July and September. Icebergs is set to reinvigorate your winter Sundays with takeovers from Sydney’s most well-known bars: Expect a 1970s disco party from Double Deuce Lounge, signature ‘50s inspired service from Maybe Sammy, a New Orleans themed party hosted by Earl’s Juke Joint, and a big finale by the crew at Shady Pines Saloon.

  • Archibald Prize Showcase

    The Archibald Prize, first awarded in 1921, is the country’s favourite art award, and one of its most prestigious. Awarded to the best portrait painting, it’s a who’s who of Australian culture – from politicians to celebrities, sporting heroes to artists. This year’s winner is Sydney-based artist Julia Gutman for her portrait, Head in the sky, feet on the ground, montage of singer-songwriter Montaigne. The 29-year-old first-time Archibald Prize finalist is one of the youngest winners in the 102-year-history of the prize. Gutman’s win also marks the 13th time the Archibald Prize has been awarded to a woman (11th woman to win) since it began in 1921.

  • Melbourne International Film Festival

    The Melbourne International Film Festival is back for its 71st year with an expansive program of acclaimed international cinema, world premieres and the best in new Australian film. MIFF has an Academy, BAFTA and AACTA accredited short film competition. where the winners of the top prizes in the competition become eligible for Oscar consideration. This year’s program includes highlights already shown at Sydney Film Festival, including No Bears, Hello Dankness, Smoke Sauna Sisterhood, and How to Blow up a Pipeline.

  • Sydney Fringe Festival

    The Sydney Fringe Festival is the largest independent arts festival in New South Wales with over 450 events over 70 venues across Greater Sydney. There will be a free singer-songwriter performances for Acoustic Ritual in George Place in the CBD; an AI-generated art block party down the street at Sydney Place; Young Henrys' Best Served Loud live music series hitting Parramatta for the first time; and the closing party in Kensington Street in Chippendale, which will feature a line-up of around 50 performers celebrating Caribbean culture as picó collective El Gran Mono takes over the city's most eclectic eat street.

  • Now or Never

    Featuring over 300 Australian and international sonic and visual artists and composers, Now or Never is Melbourne’s newest large-scale festival celebrating digital art and future thinking. Taking over city streets and venues such as late night club spots and historic buildings, the cutting-edge program is jam-packed with art installations, music performances and thought provoking experiences. Highlights you won’t want to miss include, a multi-sensory dining experience by Supernormal, music festivals inside the Royal Exhibition Building, a pop-up 360-degree dome cinema, a 1.2-kilometre art trail in the Docklands, and Semi Permanent’s new conference.

  • Pierre Bonnard at The NGV

    Bonnard is one of the most beloved painters of the twentieth century, celebrated for his use of colour to convey an exquisite sense of emotion. The exhibition features more than 100 works in the form of paintings, drawings, photographs, folding screens and early cinema that will bring modern France to life with startling beauty and vivid colour. Bonnard became one of the first artists to draw inspiration from the new medium of cinema in his art and also embraced photography by casting his eye over his family circle to capture moments of unexpected movement.

  • Horizon Festival

    The Horizon Festival on the Sunshine Coast promotes all areas of culture and art in Australia in a huge 10-day-long event. As the custodians of Kabi Kabi (Gubbi Gubbi) and Jinibara Country, the role of festival is to strengthen the ecology of Kabi Kabi and Jinibara arts and cultural practices, and to position Horizon Festival as a place where you can experience beautiful First Nations work. Each year, the festival brings together all mediums of art, including film, comedy, poetry, creative writing, music, performance and innovative new designs to create a unique event.

  • Total Immersion Festival: Tickets On Sale Now

    The Australian Chamber Orchestra presents Total Immersion Festival, an intimate and exclusive performance event that allows audiences to experience the visceral connection between musicians on stage and feel the music as they do. The festival will see an exclusive group of just 50 audience members per show, weave their way through the ACO’s award-winning home at Pier 2/3. Here they will explore three different and immersive performance experiences featuring the musicians of the ACO and vocalists from The Song Company. Eight 70-minute events will run over two days in The Neilson, The Studio and the Belgiorno Room.

  • John Kaufmann

    The world’s greatest tenor, John Kaufmann, is set to perform at the Sydney Opera House. He will lead an all-star cast of some of the world’s leading opera singers for two exclusive concert performances of Ponchielli’s La Gioconda as part of the Sydney Opera House’s 50th Anniversary celebrations. Joining Kaufmann, and making her Sydney Opera House debut, is celebrated Spanish soprano Saioa Hernández and completing the star-studded cast will be one of Australia’s most successful exports, mezzo soprano Deborah Humble.

  • Elvis: A Musical Revolution

    Presley has sold more than one billion records, has been inducted into five Halls of Fame and holds the record for most hits in the Top 40. The production will be led by award-winning producer David Venn and produced in partnership with Authentic Brands Group, which owns Elvis Presley Enterprises. The musical celebrates the extraordinary life of award winning, cultural icon, Elvis Presley. From his childhood in Mississippi, to his ascent to become ‘The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll’, this brand-new high-energy production explores the pivotal moments in Elvis’s life and music career.

  • Chicago The Musical

    Smash-hit Musical Chicago is bringing its 1920s razzle dazzle back to Australia. As the longest-running American musical in Broadway and West End history, the performance explores murder, greed, corruption, exploitation, adultery, and treachery in slick and glittering, show-stopping numbers. Created by the musical theatre talents of John Kander, who last week was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Tony Awards.

    Come watch the world’s best players compete for the greatest prize in women’s football at the FIFA Women's World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023. A record 64 fixtures will be played in the space of a month across Australia and New Zealand. This is the ninth Women's World Cup in history and will be the biggest yet with 32 teams competing. The USA will enter this latest Women's World Cup as defending champions, while England are chasing their first title having been crowned 2022 European champions.

    The ACO will present a brand new musical and theatrical take on a popular fairytale in The Princess, The Pea (and The Brave Escapee) for young children and their families.   • Kaleidoscope

    After delighting 160,000 Australians in six cities, this 700-square-metre labyrinth of lights, mirrors and hypnotic sound is ready to receive Sydneysiders. Kaleidoscope is a walkable, open-air mirror maze by leading installation artist Keith Courtney, known for House of Mirrors and 1000 Doors. Like its iconic namesake, this giant, human-sized kaleidoscope contains internal mirrors, luminous glass, and translucent beads of colour.

  • Cirque De Soleil

    Cirque du Soleil Crystal is a one-of-a-kind production where circus arts meet the ice for the very first time.
